In honor of Black History Month, South County High presents A Celebration of African American Soldiers on Friday, February 15, beginning at 7 p.m.  Although African Americans have fought in every major U.S. war, the battle for integration and recognition of African American soldiers has been a slow process. It was during the Korean War that the armed services became integrated. Throughout the program, students will discuss the journey of the African American as he fought for freedom both at home and abroad in speeches, poetry, song, and dance.  The school presentation under the direction of Tanya Smith will showcase the history, talents, and vision of an American people. To begin the evening, the Minority Achievement Committee will host a Southern-style dinner from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. presented by Chef Anthony Holliday, former White House Executive Chef and U.S. veteran. Advance purchase of dinners and reservations are available online. All proceeds benefit the MAC Scholars tutoring program.
