a photo of geosystemsDuring their astronomy unit in Geosystems class, South County High students built model satellites to learn how scientists explore, collect data, and make inferences about objects in space. Students were provided with specific size and weight parameters to follow when building their satellites. Designed to help students answer that all too common question about objects in space, (“How do we know that? We have never been there”), the lesson allows the students to see how technology is used in space exploration while allowing them to form a deep understanding about the type of instruments scientists use and the data said instruments collect. Students use creative and critical thinking as they apply information in novel and creative ways to strengthen comprehension.
